10 Tips For Buying a Used Car From a Dealership

  1. Ensure you purchase a used vehicle from a reputable car dealer. In the UK a purchaser has far more rights and safeguards when purchasing through a bona fide dealer.
  2. Ask the dealer to confirm how they have carried out the provenance checks on a used car offered for sale. There are many independent bodies that dealers can use to verify mileage, number of owners and whether the vehicle has been subject to a major insurance claim.
  3. Always test drive a car. Even if you are not mechanically minded, this may highlight faults, or the simple fact that the driving style does not suit you.
  4. If you do not feel happy with the way the car is being presented, do not proceed. Our gut instincts are quite often right about situations and if the overall experience does not feel right, walk away.
  5. If you do not feel confident about road testing a vehicle, ask someone to accompany you to help. But remember, they may be less enthusiastic about you buying a car than you are, so make sure they are reasonable in their opinions.
  6. Always set yourself a budget, but be prepared to move a little. Sometimes, particularly at a dealer, there may be an opportunity to get a better car for very little more cost.
  7. Listen to the dealers finance offer if you need to fund your purchase. Good, reputable dealers are using main stream lenders with ‘rate for risk’ quotations, similar to high street and internet lenders. So let them do the work for you at no extra cost, and it may provide one stop shopping.
  8. Check the warranty being offered. You should expect a minimum of 6 months, but look for 12 months. If you are concerned about the cover provided, ask to see a copy of the policy booklet showing you what is covered and what is excluded. Remember though, it is a used car and the older it gets the exclusions will increase.
  9. If you agree to buy a car, make sure the order form details everything you have agreed with the dealer. It should state the period of warranty, details of servicing work to be carried out and any specific repairs ie paintwork, replacement tyres etc.
  10. If a car offered to you sounds too good to be true price wise, then it probably is. If a used car is offered for a much lower price than the going rate for similar cars, there will be a reason why. It could have a poor history, have outstanding finance or even be stolen.

Peugeot 207 Encourages Potential Car Buyers With Its Extravagant Looks

What would you expect if you expand the 206 version of Peugeot with chiselled edges and blend its looks with the manufacturer’s other models. The result is the all new Peugeot 207 – the attention seeker. What makes this car so special than its predecessors?

Peugeot 207 has appealed many car buyers with its attractively styled looks and being one of the best superminis. It’s roomy, well-equipped and features a panoramic glass roof. The glass roofs come with sun blinds and can really brighten the interior giving it a classy driving experience. The interior is as beautiful as its exterior with comfy seats and elegant dash designs. Decent plastics and well-placed switchgear give the cabin a sensation of quality, with the chrome-ringed instrument dials having a stylish look to them. A cramped passenger footwell does raise right-hand-drive suspicions a little, but left-hookers were spot on, with a ‘normal’ relationship between controls for arms and legs. Impressive boot space underlines the 207’s claim to be the grown-up supermini, with one of the biggest luggage compartments in the segment.

With respect to ride and handling Peugeot 207 doesn’t disappoint its riders. Its quite comfortable on faster and longer journeys. It gives us option of three diesel and three petrol engines ranging from 1.4 litres to 1.6 litres producing 70bhp to 110bhp respectively. The more powerful 1.6 litre motor makes more noise but feels barely quicker. A long wheelbase means that it’s able to effectively smooth out progress over lumpy, bumpy roads. Although the steering wheel offers good sensitivity and there’s reasonable grip, although the rear wheel can be coaxed out of line in slippery corners.

Lookswise it matches the TV ad campaign encouraging potential buyers to “Give them something to watch”. It’s the sexiest hatch on the street and a good value for money. If you’re in the market for a supermini the Peugeot 207 is certainly worth checking out.

Peugeot – From Coffee to Cars

The Peugeot Family has been in business in some form or another since the seventeen hundreds. From the production of coffee to bicycles in the early part of the twentieth century, automobiles would be the next big thing to come along.

The company produced its first automobile in 1889. The car was steam powered and had three wheels. However, steam proved to be unwieldy and cumbersome for use in any personal passenger vehicles. After meeting with Gottlieb Daimler, Armand Peugeot decided that the gasoline internal combustion engine was much more suited to what he had in mind. Peugeot acquired a license from Daimler to use their engines in Peugeot vehicles. Cars produced by the French company would remain powered by Daimler engines until the first Peugeot engines were developed in 1896.

Just as it had always been, Peugeot continued to produce a variety of products up through the turn of the twentieth century when Armand Peugeot formed his own company to focus exclusively on automobile manufacturing.

Peugeot would become an early influence on car racing in Europe and would remain a power in this arena for years to come. Around the time of World War 1, Armand decided to try his handed at motorcycles. His family had longed produced some of the finest bicycles in Europe. Armand was just as successful at motorcycles as his family had been with bicycles and the Peugeot Auto Company has produced motorcycles every since.

Once Europe became embroiled in World War I, Peugeot, just as most other manufacturers of the time, turned their attention to the war efforts. They eventually became a major manufacturer of arms and military vehicles throughout the remainder of the war. Once the allies were victorious, the focus once again turned to car production.

The French car company entered the United States market in 1958 with the Peugeot 404. Peugeot was never able to find its niche in American society and for the most part consumers simply ignored the brand. After several attempts to pique the curiosity of the American car buyer, Peugeot decided to cut its losses and withdrew from the American market. This did not exclude the company from going after American car manufacturers in Europe, however. In 1978, the company took over Chrysler Europe. Chrysler Corporation was suffering from heavy financial losses both at home and abroad and accepted the offer to take the ailing division off its hands almost immediately. Earlier in 1974, Peugeot had also acquired Citroen and for a brief period had interest in Maserati as well. The acquisition of so much debt so quickly proved nearly to be the undoing of Peugeot in the early eighties. The introduction of the popular Peugeot 205 was credited with the company’s recovery from the brink of financial ruin. While the 205 was able to save the company from complete collapse, Peugeot was still experiencing some financial stress.

For the future, Peugeot has announced a goal of selling 4 million units annually. In order to accomplish this, the French car manufacturer has plans of pursuing some of the more exotic markets in the world such as China, Russia and South America. Due to the weakening of the U.S. Dollar, there has been some talk of a return to the American market. At this point, that may well be speculation only.
